Once again I thoroughly enjoyed it. This last book was sped along by me listening to it on the drive down to Georgia (a great way to pass miles). There is so much from this series I would like to apply to my life. The old value of honor, hard work, friendship, and the journey is what is important, not the end.<br />
I cannot recommend this series more than I have, but it is amazing once you let it grow on you. At the end of this last book it relates how he started in 1970 and finished in 2009. Amazing!Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-80368561798335385552011-04-18T22:47:00.000-04:002011-04-18T22:47:16.773-04:00make a craftI decided that I need a bigger camera bag and I just happened to have a messenger bag that I loved and Connie has been doing her own version of silk screening. Song of Susannah is a bit shorter than some of the others, but so many important events happen and get set up for the climatic finish. I hate doing reviews because I don't want to spoil secrets but I want to get others to read the books so I never know how much to tell. I guess I'd be safe in saying that Susannah's trial with her personalities take up much of the book and get sorted out as well as some business with the rose and the vacant lot. There is a lot of time traveling, alternate worlds and meddling in fate, so if you have a hard time wrapping your head around stuff like that (think Matrix) you may not like this series.</P><P style="MARGIN: 0px"> </P><P style="MARGIN: 0px">But wow oh wow, this is my favorite series of books ever!</P><P style="MARGIN: 0px"> </P><P style="MARGIN: 0px">On to the last one where the Tower is won or lost!! </P></FONT>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-18126915245413073102011-03-09T01:29:00.001-05:002011-03-09T01:29:53.716-05:00Read The Wolves of the Calla<FONT face="Default Sans Serif,Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif" size=2><P style="MARGIN: 0px">Continuing on my journey for the Dark Tower I read the fifth book in the series, The Wolves of the Calla. This is one of my favorites, more of an isolated adventure that takes place in a sleepy little border town where strange raiders abduct children every generation. I again enjoyed it greatly. This book takes the reader back to Roland's past and one of his first adventures as a gunslinger and shows how the Dark Tower first enters his life. I am impressed that Stephen King can weave such a detailed back story into the stream of a story and make it feel uninterrupted. It feels natural to happen here, right in the middle of the series. There is some bookending done in the current timeline and a neat adventure in what seems like Oz, but the majority of the time is spent when Roland is only in his teens.</P><P style="MARGIN: 0px"> </P><P style="MARGIN: 0px">Next is book five in the series, "Wolves of the Calla"</P></FONT>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-4514123670528067042011-02-21T10:16:00.000-05:002011-02-21T10:16:54.432-05:00Buy a DSLR<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H0bjd4zx320/TWKBLgicGtI/AAAAAAAABgA/AZo17GMGtkU/s1600/nikon_d3100_digital_camera.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H0bjd4zx320/TWKBLgicGtI/AAAAAAAABgA/AZo17GMGtkU/s320/nikon_d3100_digital_camera.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />

This item has replaced "Buy a Motorcycle" as I don't see me buying a motorcycle. It just doesn't make sense in a city where we are buried in snow for 6 months out of the year, but I do LOVE to take pictures. And with a DSLR I can take some great pictures (hopefully) and that will help me with my weekly blog feature. Also I might be able to sell some on etsy for my other 30/30 item. <br />
<br />
So with out tax refund I was able to get the Nikon d3100 for my birthday. I LOVE it!!! I'm still learning but already the pictures I am to get are really awesome.<br />

Got rid of all of our consumer credit debt. No more Best Buy bills. No more paying for furniture. All done working for discover card. It is a nice relief to not have to remember to pay different companies every month. We still have student loan debt and a car loan, but those are to be taken care of as we can. They aren't killing our credit score or just throwing money away. I'm happy to have learned from the mistakes of my youth and finally set one right.Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-13491840795866148102011-02-10T20:20:00.000-05:002011-02-10T20:20:19.456-05:00Play Your Shape: Fitness EvolvedWOW! I played the demo for this game and all it included was a gym game, and while fun, wasn't the deepest experience. Best Buy put Kinect games on sale and I read lots of good reviews (including the one by my good friend Hana) and decided this is one to pick up. I am so glad I did. The workout routines are fun, VERY challenging and don't seem to carry on forever. The interface is clean and informative, the trainer isn't obnoxious and the fact that there is already added downloadable content shows that they plan on supporting this product for a while. <div style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I was pondering over what to read next for my 30/30 list (I fear that it is a thing I may come up lacking on) and came across a book I read quite some time ago and remembered enjoying greatly. The Waste Lands is the third in a series of seven books called the Dark Tower saga by Stephen King. Each book is large (by my standards at least) and for a series to be seven books long seems massive, but this has to be one of the best things I think I've ever read. In a world that closely parallels our own the last of the gunslingers heads ever towards the Dark Tower. It's fun to see how in a broken, worn down world little bits of our own have bled through in "thin" spots. Symbolsim run deep through the whole series and double meanings are everywhere. If you enjoyed that part of the TV show Lost, this is a series for you!</span></div><div style="margin: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">In this particular installment, the gunslinger has started to lose his mind by a tearing in the timeline caused by him killing and not killing the same person at different times in his journey. Aided by his new gunslingers in training, Eddie and Suzannah, they start to make real progress towards their destination. But as they find a means of speeding their progress, perhaps they will have to regretted wishing for a speedier means of transport.</span></div><div style="margin: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I do love this series, and will probably read the remainder of it. The library did not have the first two volumes in when I grabbed this one and I remember most of what happend in them anyways. If you like any of King's other works, they appear throughout the series. Vampires from Salem's Lot, the man in black from The Stand and many more.</span></div>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-85042920722350207612011-01-21T00:52:00.002-05:002011-02-06T17:01:53.930-05:00Read Just After Sunset<span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"></span><br />
<div style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I just picked up Stephen King's compilation of short stories "Just After Sunset" from the library and rekindled my love for King's writing. I had forgotten how he can just wrap me up in his characters and get me concerned for what will happen next. This is even more amazing to me as these are all short stories and I would think much more challenging to create the backstory and emotional attachment to characters and level of detail I am used to. Some of these stories like Gingerbread Girl I could easily see being made into a TV movie. It was really fun to hear him mention Case Western University in one of the stories as I had worked there a number of years ago.</span></div><div style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">A very enjoyable read and I think I'll pick up another one of his books for my next read too.</span></div>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-11900952311331893812011-01-06T23:54:00.002-05:002011-02-06T17:01:42.572-05:00read Quitters Inc<span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"></span><br />
<div style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">I've always been a fan of Stephen King, so when I saw that he had an available title on the library's ebook service I jumped at the chance. It's not a very long book, but very much a stephen king one. The premise is a cigarette addict meets up by chance with an old friend and asks how he quit and his friend refers him to Quitters Inc. This place takes a new and very drastic way of motivating clients to quit their habits, pain and torture to loved ones.</span></div><div style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">The premise is pretty good, but not new it seems. The twists are rather predictable and the characters are not overly developed like most king novels are. This largely comes from the lenght of the piece I suppose, but it would have been more compelling if I was a little more attached to the main character.</span></div><div style="margin: 0px;"><span style="font-family: 'Default Sans Serif', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Not a bad book by any stretch, just short and to the point.</span></div>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-70839239864255227162010-12-24T10:56:00.000-05:002010-12-24T10:56:00.473-05:00Movie reviews DONEI've finished up my reviewing of movies! I have always been a fan of Nicholas Cage, a stance not shared by many reviewers. I liked his performance in most of his movies like Con Air, City of Angels, and this movie delivers another good performance. <br />
This movie follows Cage's character, Balthazar, as he searches for Merlin's decendant to save the world. When the apprentice turns out to be a geeky physics nerd some comedy gets injected into the story.<br />
All in all, the special effects are outstanding, the storyline is predictable, but enjoyable and the performances delivered are good enough for me to recommend this for a fun evening.Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-15598130183236000822010-12-24T08:48:00.000-05:002010-12-24T08:48:00.561-05:00Review for Fallout New Vegas<div style="margin: 0px;">One of my favorite games of all time is Fallout 3. Then the same company announced it would be making Fallout New Vegas, I was really excited. It's not a direct sequel in that Fallout 3 takes place on the east coast and New Vegas takes place in....you guessed it the Vegas strip area. Many have complained that there is not much new to the engine or many new features, it's just an expensive DLC. I am a little sad that there weren't very many new things added, but the ones they did are really cool. You can now make your own ammo and other supplies at various work tables. Also introduced is the concept of reputation in addition of karma as how people react to you. Other than that it's a lot of the same old GREAT game! I can see that this will suck a LOT of time out of my weekends.</div>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-59028576831690139042010-12-23T08:46:00.000-05:002010-12-23T08:46:00.335-05:00Review for Castlevania Lords of Shadow<div style="margin: 0px;">I have always been rather hot and cold about the castlevania series. I love the story behind them and the game design, but I was still pretty young when they came out for the most part and they were crazy hard so I got to a certain point then didn't enjoy them anymore out of frustration. When I first heard about the Castlevania Lords of Shadow game I got really excited because I figured that as an adult i would be more capable of handling the challenges the game would pose to me. So far I am right and I do enjoy the game very much. It seems really reminiscent of a God of War-esque game with combos and upgrading combat skills through orbs received from fallen enemies, but it is a very enjoyable game. The boss battles are so far are very epic! I don't want to go into too much detail as this is still a very story driven game, but the fact that Patrick Stewart is a voice actor for one of the main characters and the narrator I think is amazing! Unfortunatly I sent it back before I could complete it due to spending WAY too much time fighting camera angles and aimlessly wandering looking for some trinket every other level. Good game, just not quite polished in my opinion.</div>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-11546737561863506652010-11-28T07:05:00.001-05:002010-12-23T01:48:30.300-05:00Brotherhood of WolvesFor something new I decided to try out a French film. Avoiding all the crazy mushy romances I went with the brotherhood of wolves, or Le pacte des loupes. It was a really good movie, but it would suffer a bit in American cinema I think. First off, it is about 2.5 hours long. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the pacing is a little slow than what I am used to and there are some extraneous interactions that would be left on the cutting room floor. That being said the character development is odd in that you feel connected to the characters but not completely and not until the end. <br />
The story takes place in the time of trickle hats and powdered wigs as they are everywhere! In a provence of France there are some mysterious killings by a horrible beast and the king's taxidermist and his loyal companion are sent to get to the bottom of matters. <br />
I did enjoy the movie, had to push myself through some slow parts but felt rewarded by the ending. <br />

Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-49606137568569668172010-11-08T01:25:00.002-05:002010-11-23T01:47:08.161-05:00Kinect is here!<span style="font-family: Default Sans Serif,Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"></span><br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">Kinect is HERE! I'm not usually a day one adopter, but this is too cool to pass up. Kinect is a series of 2 or 3 cameras that track your whole body and let you interact with the Xbox 360. It also has a microphone for voice interaction as well. The only downside of Kinect I've had so far is thta it take a LOT of room to use properly. We had to rearrange our living room a little bit and everytime we want to play a Kinect game we have to push the coffee table one way and a chair the other way, but it's not horrible.</div><div style="margin: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0px;">The Kinect comes bundles with Kinect Adventures. This game makes great use of the Kinect. There are 5 different games that you are challenged with they can be really intense! Rallyball is like getting locked in a raquetball court with insane dodgeballs, but you want to get hit by the dodgeballs so they destroy blocks. This was one of the demos that they first showed off the Kinect's (then Natal) potential. My oldest's favorite game is Reflex Ridge. This is the one that can have your heart rate up after a few minutes of play. You have to duck, jump, sidestep and pose around obstacles to get adventure pins. This game looks AMAZING! I really wasn't expecting a bundle game to impress me as much as this does. It's powered by Unreal technology for those who play games. the soundtrack is well done too. It's not uncommon for my oldest (or me) to be bopping along during downtimes or between adventures, and the fun thing is that your avatar will be mirroring your movements on screen.</div><div style="margin: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0px;">The Kinect is a blast! I have read a number of bad reviews for some of the launch games, but for the sensor itself and Kinect Adventures, it is a home run! As is go get it and run home and play it now!</div>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-40421967184537681192010-10-26T05:56:00.001-04:002010-10-26T13:02:11.960-04:00Angry birdsI don't pay for many iPod apps, but after it tried put the free demo and then got my wife hooked on Angry birds, I invested the $.99 for the full version. It comes with over 100 levels of maddeningly addictive catapult puzzles. <br />
The game is hilarious and the sound effects are side splitting. I'd you haven't tried it yet, you might be one of the last ones. <br />

In that spirit, I've been playing the originals to find out their roots. I've been playing assassin's creed in anticipation for the third installment due out in November. I'm really enjoying this game. I played all the way through the second one and enjoyed every minute of it and this one is no different. There are a few differences between the two games, but none that make the older one unplayable in comparison to the newer one. These games don't have fast frantic action of a devil may cry game, it's more of a thinking and planning sort of killing game. <br />
A great over arcing story ties it all together for a very enjoyable experience. <br />

Then after seeing a few previews with graphics and addons that look straight from an old Nintendo game I was sold. Since my ability to go to movie theaters is limited by my refusal to pay $10 per ticket then have to pay a babysitter on top of that I picked up the comics that inspired the movie. There are 6 in all and I could only find 5 at the time of this writing but they were a joy to read. Full of lots of humor and wit they were a great read. Drawn in black and white except for a few color pages might be a hang up for a few people but it was easy enough to overlook once the story sucks you in. Now after reading the comics I am very excited to see the movie and see how closely the characters are represented and the story followed.</div></span>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-11303285043390053532010-09-30T17:22:00.000-04:002010-09-30T17:22:29.431-04:00Play Halo ReachWOW! That's what was on my mind the entire time I was playing Halo Reach. A prequel set just before the events of Halo Combat Evolved on the original Xbox this game was Bungie's swansong for the Halo franchise. Bungie is no longer under contract to make Halo games for Microsoft and they did an AMAZING job on this one. The graphics and story are beyond expectation and the multiplayer (which is something I've never really clocked in on the previous games) is really fun and has over 18 modes to keep things from getting boring. I really can't say enough about this game, if you are even considering buying it, DO IT. If you have an Xbox 360, BUY IT. It's that good, that's all I can manage to say...must get back to controller now.....Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-41520950138667102352010-09-30T17:14:00.000-04:002010-09-30T17:14:07.883-04:00watch Ironman 2<div class="ii gt" id=":67"><div id=":66"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><div style="margin: 0px;">I missed the opportunity to see Iron Man 2 in the theatres (I don't get to go to theatres much, not that I want to play $15 to see a movie) so I was really excited that it is finally out on DVD so I could see it. I remember hearing people saying it was ok, mostly just more of the same of Iron Man 1 but I thought that is defiantly not a bad thing. I really enjoyed it and this time I can sit and watch it with Gabs as she likes superhero movies. There isn't a lot of over the top violence, but there is plenty of action. I didn't let her see the first Iron Man movie for the torture and surgery sequences but this doesn't have any uber intense scenes like that. There are lots of little hidden gems for people paying attention that hint towards the coming Avengers movie, but not a whole lot of fan lore in the Iron Man story like the first one. </div><div style="margin: 0px;"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0px;">This is a well made movie, nothing really innovative or groundbreaking, but if you enjoyed the first one pick this up and you won't be sorry!!</div></span></div></div>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885908603600419064.post-31790496372657139642010-09-25T02:50:00.001-04:002010-09-30T17:16:47.321-04:00Read last OlympianI finished up the last book in the Percy Jackson series and I must say that I am very glad that I read this series. It was entertaining nearly all the way through, had great characters, a good over-arcing storyline as well as episodic stories and the thing that I really appreciated was the conclusion to the story. I don't want to give much away, but I am getting tired of all these stories that feel the need to have the hero give up something for the good of everyone or sacrifice themselves to save the world. Now I'm not saying that selfishness is an endearing quality in heroes, but I feel that they should be genuinely rewarded from time to time without strings the size tow cables attached. I'm thoroughly happy with the clash of the huge armies, the final fight between Percy and Kronos, and the resolution after the battle. This series is wonderful and if you remotely like the Harry Potter series you should look into this series. <br />

<div style="margin: 0px;">I saw the trailer for The Expendables months ago and thought how great it is that they got all these iconic action stars together for a movie. Well I was right an wrong. The action sequences in this movie are pretty good, but the story is next to non-existant. Someone told me this is the guy equivilant of a romance novel, whole lot of fluff, not a lot of substance. Unfortunatly I can't even say the action sequences are all that amazing. They seem to me sort of dated or just on par with the stars' other movies. Nothing really over the top or memorable that is going to have me popping this in just to see a sequence over again (ie G.I. Joe Paris car chase...AMAZING!!!). Over all, not a bad movie per say, just not as good of a movie as it could have been or I wished it was I guess.</div>Klinthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13394982675742691570noreply@blogger.com0
